[texhax] lists

Is there an environment in LaTeX which lists items (enumerating them)  
but fits as many as it can into one line, instead of putting a  
linebreak after each item?  I have in mind the format of parts of a  
problem, where you give general directions "for each case below" and  
then list several cases.
The usual enumerate environment ends up taking a lot of space for  
relatively little print.
