The best place to look for freeware, shareware and commercial
distributions and front-ends is
http://www.esm.psu.edu/mac-tex/default9.html
I think you should subscribe to the TeX on Mac OS X Mailing List (in
the same page above): there are many persons who have been using TeX
since the pre-X (and pre-9) days. They could advice you on the
alternatives.
