Depends on what fonts are available and what your budget is.
Times of course is a good one for saving space (esp. if one gets the
optical variants as described in _TeX Unbound_ by Alan Hoenig).
One of the Multiple Master fonts with a width axis is another good
choice---Minion is one of the better text faces so equipped.
I believe the other questions are covered in the FAQ or in the docs for
the relevant packages.
