[texhax] spacing between mathtype characters

Dear all,

A beginner.
I have the following lines in my preamble

\mathsurround 1.2pt
\thinmuskip=2mu
\medmuskip=2.5mu plus 1mu minus 1mu
\thickmuskip=4mu plus 1.5mu minus 1mu

However, this does not have any affect on spacing between mathtype characters 
that are embeded in the actual text. 

Is it possble to adjust the spacing between mathtype characters that are 
embedded in the text which is consistent with above spacing for displayed mathtype 
characters?
