That's obsolete, I believe. Use mathptmx instead if it's supported by 
your tex distribution. You may have to add helv.sty to that if you need 
Helvetica as your sans.

Unfortunately, the FAQ doesn't have a good answer on this, closest is:

your tex distribution should include fntguide which has the answer in 
it, or do a search or download

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/base/fntguide.tex

You may want to think in terms of bp (PostScript points) instead of pt 
(Printer's points though)
