An alternative is to (mis)use the "acronym" package.  Quite simply, instead
of using it to define acronyms, use it to define a bold version for the
first occurrence.  Unfortunately, you'd need to hack it to alter the initial
occurrence output, which is, e.g., "operating system (OS)" - but that
shouldn't be too difficult.
