I just tried that and I got the error message ``! You can't use 
`\spacefactor' in vertical mode.''

So of course, one must wrap the preamble stuff in \makeatletter and 
\makeatother as follows:

     \bgroup
     \@flushglue = 0pt plus 1fil minus \textwidth
     \begin{center}%
       \hfuzz = \maxdimen
       \ignorespaces % IMPORTANT: so space after \begin{widecenter} is 
gobbled

     \egroup
}
\makeatother
