[texhax] signum(x) function?

Using AMS packages, the easiest way is:

 \newcommand{\sgn}{\operatorname{sgn}}

otherwise use

 \newcommand{\sgn}{\mathop{\mathrm{sgn}}}

The \mathop is needed to get the spacing correct, for
an operator or function-name.
