[XeTeX] TL2008 on Ubuntu

I'll second that, in case TeXLive takes some time yet to make it's way
into Debian/Ubuntu, the TeXlive DVD download installs fine on Ubuntu
8.10  I expect it might take some time yet for TL08 to make its way
into the Deb/ubuntu repositories.  I have read older comments by the
maintainers that the package support in TeXLive is hard to figure out
how to handle in conjunction with Ubuntu's own package management.

Once you install it, getting the TeX-related PATHs right takes some
care, and texinfo raises an issue, since Debian/Ubuntu use an older
non-GNU 'texinfo' script to do the same work, in a way that is not
compatible with GNU texinfo.  (It's a minor issue that only effects
you if you use the 'info' command, but is a bit thorny if you do).
Anyway, aside from that it works fine.

The texinfo issue, though, is an illustration of one of the problems
confronting the TL2008 packagers for Deb/Ubuntu.  The texinfo TL
requires and installs in /usr/local/bin is actually incompatible with
the version Debian/Ubuntu need for the current functioning of the
'info' documentation system.  It's not unsolvable, perhaps
(Debian/Ubuntu could usefully upgrade to the new 'texinfo'), but it is
an issue.
