When TL2006 is released, it should include the appropriate xetex
support files, etc., which will make many of the installation/
configuration issues go away. If you start from TL2005, there's still
an integration challenge to deal with.

There are a few samples (mostly Plain TeX-based) in the
"documentation and sample files" archive available from the web site
(Downloads page). Some of the files are set up to use Mac OS X fonts,
but there are also some using freely available OpenType fonts.
Other Arabic/Persian users here might be able to offer you additional
examples.
