[XeTeX] pool-size too small

I'm still a little green when it comes to messing around with TeX's internal workings, so please forgive me if this question is ubearably dumb.
Just to get an idea of what is going in in the configuration file, I did this (I'm more comfortable with emacs):
su emacs 'kpsewhich texmf.cnf'
and did a search for 'pool_size' . I came up empty -- there was no pool_size line of any kind. Is this something that is added to the texmf.cnf file, or should it already be there?
Thanks for any info.
