The complete metric file for type1 fonts is AFM, Adobe Font Metric, which is always an ASCII file. AFM contains far more information than pfm, which is---in effect---a stripped down metric file for the more limited TTF format. PFM is in a sense not appropriate for use with Type1. Pierre MacKay
