You're right, the pdftex.map seems garbled at some point:

Then the file only contains a suite of ^@ (as shown with less).

I just installed tl17 pretest.  Then used getnonfreefont-sys -a,
which seems to have cluttered several files.  How can I
regenerate them without reinstalling everything?
