As far as I can tell, LuaTeX does offer access to any system font. For both
XeTeX and LuaTeX the user-facing system for font access is the fontspec
package:

    http://ctan.org/pkg/fontspec

Fontspec was originally XeTeX-specific but recently added support for LuaTeX
(last year if I recall correctly). So, system font access is definitely more
mature for XeTeX but also possible under LuaTeX without adopting a different
interface.
