Alternatively, create the directory as root and chown it to yourself:
sudo mkdir /usr/local/texlive
sudo chown $USER /usr/local/texlive
If you like that idea, you might also like the idea of actually
installing TL2010 to /usr/local/texlive/2010 and creating a symlink
cd /usr/local/texlive
ln -s 2010 current
Then you can put /usr/local/texlive/current in your PATH, and when
TL2011 comes out, you install it to /usr/local/texlive/2011 and change
the symlink when you have TL2011 all ready to go.
