[texhax] Spacing with maketitle

A little googling finds the titling package which will do what you want
I think:

Try:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{titling}
\setlength{\droptitle}{-0.5in}

\begin{document}

\title{My title}
\author{Me, myself, and I}
\date{22 Dec}

\maketitle

\end{document}
