as there have not been better answers yet, I dare to offer something I once
did in one project many years ago. It might not be good, but it still
works.

What I did was to define my own page styles.

\makeatletter	% allow @ as part of command names
}
}
\makeatother	% revert @ to its special meaning(s)

...

% if you do that first, you can be more sloppy with what you have to
% include in your own page style definitions:
\pagestyle{fancyplain}
% now call your own page style definitions:
