Hi all,

The BibDesk development team is pleased to announce that BibDesk finally has
support for BibTeX macros! This feature necessitated some low-level changes
in the program, and the documentation is not complete, so we are releasing
it as an alpha.

Please use the bibdesk-users mailing list
<http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/bibdesk-users> for discussion of
this release. Discussions on MacOSX-TeX may not be seen by the
appropriate developers, and future alpha releases won't be announced here.

If you download it, you need to be willing to file bug reports on interface
issues and other problems you encounter. There are no known data loss
issues, but don't use this on the only copy of your thesis bibliography.
The download URL is in the following message.

*** WARNING ***

This is an alpha release of BibDesk, which means that it has not been
extensively tested. Many changes have been made to support macros; we think
this is a great new feature, but please back up your .bib files before using
it! If you want to see if changes have been made in a file, you can use
FileMerge from the developer tools, or the opendiff command in Terminal
(e.g. `opendiff myOldFile.bib myNewFile.bib`).

Bug reports should be submitted at
<http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=61487&atid=497423>, and feel free
to discuss the new features on the bibdesk-users mailing list. Online help
is not available yet for the new features.

** Macro usage notes:
- All fields are displayed in the preview and editor as expanded values (if
the string is defined).
- Use cmd-R in the editor to edit the "raw" BibTeX directly; this is what
the value will look like when saved to disk.
- If you delete the outer braces in the raw editor, they will not appear
when saved. For example, to enter an abbreviated month, select the "Month"
field, hit cmd-R (or use the menu item), delete the braces that appear, and
enter the abbreviated month. The expanded value will also be shown.
- To edit @string definitions, use the "Window->Macros" menu item.
