Maybe you must create it first?
No, one need to have admin rights to modify those folders. If you
have admin rights, do the following at the shell prompt:
sudo su -
It will ask for password, punch in your password. You become root by
this way and hereafter you won't have any rights problems.

The new OzTeX CD will contain Gerben's teTeX/gs installer (assuming
I manage to download it :)). I'm burning the CD in about 2 weeks

Hi Andrew,
Are you going to include enabled sets of fonts on the CD? The
obvious candidates from my perspective are the CM and AMS fonts as
well as the XY-pic fonts. (I figure, if I don't ask you mightn't
think to do it and it is too late once the CD is out :-)
Also , there was some discussion on the list some time ago about how,
under OS X, files needed to be viewed at greater than 100% to look as
smooth as they did under classic. As I recall you made some comment
about a difference between how ATM works and the corresponding part
of OS X as being the cause of the problem. In any event, this is
certainly my experience. Assuming I haven't missed something on the
list, is there any resolution to this problem likely in the near
future?

Have you tried an application like Fetch or Interarchy which
can generally restart an interrupted download where the
interruption occured instead of going back to the beginning
again.
Its possible the built in curl that comes with OS X can resume
downloads as well - I am not sure. Do `man curl' on the
terminal.

Are you sure you are modifying the Library folder in your
home directory and not the Library folder in the
root directory ? They are easy to confuse and
the first you should be able to modify but the second needs root
privileges.

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get instructions on
installing XY-Pic on Mac OS (9 and X) for use with OzTeX?
I think I understand that XY-Pic comes with your install if you purchase
the OzTeX CD -but unfortunately -even though we are a major Univ. we
have no money and even if we did they just won't go for that many copies
-I understand each CD is for a single user.
Not to "take away" from any CD purchases, just wondering where I can get
info on how to install it myself, if possible.

Yes.
Join a TeX User Group (e.g. TUG, see http://www.tug.org)
and you will be sent it, along with other useful CDs,
as part of the benefits of membership.
At this site, you should find a list of other User Groups
that may be more convenient to where you live.

Sure.
So paying a User Group subscription may be more attractive.
Note that "free software" does not mean cost-free.
It means that the software is licensed to allow users freedom to
use it and request/suggest/submit changes.
Supporting a User Group is a very good way to choose to pay for software
that is available with these freedoms, since it helps to ensure that
there are developers who will continue to provide their work and support.

Yes; but be careful of the number of subdirectories.
You probably should be putting the package files into a
subdirectory named:
~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/french
^^^^^
if it is a package that works only with LaTeX;
or one named:
~/Library/texmf/tex/generic/french
^^^^^^^
if the package works with general TeX formats, not just LaTeX.
This extra level of directories is needed for the kpathsea
mechanism to find the style files (and other inputs) when
texmf.cnf is setup in its default way to make best use
of the ls-R database files.
You should only add a directory such as:
~/Library/texmf/tex/french/
for a general system that is independent of LaTeX, or
requires a lot of special support files.
In this case, there should also be entries in texmf.cnf
that will allow the files to be found when needed.

After my previous email I tried a couple more times to download with the
i-installer and was finally successful! :o) The i-installer is very
good - the problem for me was the size of the download and the amount of
time wasted every time the connection broke.

Yes, I have read quite a bit recently about licences for open source
software. Perhaps I gave the impression that I was only after the
software because it was cost-free. In fact I have been waiting in vain
for Nisus to produce an OS X version of Nisus Writer and, having given
up all hope, I then discovered the combination of emacs and laTeX which
seem to do everything that Nisus Writer could do and more. My complaint
about the broken downloads was purely annoyance at having to pay the
telephone company for such a lousy internet connection.

I downloaded the new (thin) TeX i-Installer and installed/updated all
three portions. Following the instructions, I tried to use texconfig
to change the paper size to "letter". I got an error message I don't
understand, and my pdf's still come out as a4:
% sudo texconfig dvips paper letter
Password:
Error: value 'letter' not in list 'See'.
% sudo texconfig pdftex paper letter
Error: value 'letter' not in list 'See'.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

This has come up once before, and thanks to Karl, it is now clear what
is going on, so I'll inform all of you (and have adapted my web site
'tex know how' info). It turns out that the personal texmf tree he used
was also used with OzTeX at some point, and OzTeX has written a
config.ps there that is incompatible with texconfig.
On top of that, teTeX's texconfig writes in the local system-wide tree,
even if it finds config.ps in the user's personal tree.

recipe for fixing this.
