urgent question about MF heights

A picture says more than thousand words, and a Metafont run
says more than thousand email messages.
Run the CMSY and CMMI fonts with the following lines added
to the driver:
extra_endchar:="pickup pencircle scaled 1;" &
"draw (l,-d)--(r,-d)--(r,h)--(l,h)--(l,-d);" & extra_endchar;
This will make small boxes giving the TeX dimensions of characters.
Then write some complicated formulas and you'll see how everything
fits together.
