the distinction between small sizes and large sizes is that the
small ones are binary operators and the large ones take limits.
i agree with alan's proposition that anything that has a large
variant should also (probably) have a small variant, and not
vice versa. however, at least one of the binary operators that
he lists as never having seen large variants, i have seen large
ones with limits:

i also seem to remember a large \ast in this position, but i'd
rather dig up documentation on that before saying for sure.
