\special is \special; if you use the same macros to create the special,
it'll be the same in the dvi file.

actually, the thing that made _me_ keenest on the y&y distribution was
the possibility of upgrading dvips with some of the neat features of
dvipsone.

i used to think yap was quite good, but i've not used it in earnest for
years: people complain about it, a lot, but it's not clear (to me)
whether the difficulty is just configurating ghostscript to work with
yap.

whatever, an alternative would be welcome.
