Figure files

Dear All

An author has supplied me with .jpg and .png files containing his figures.
What do I  need to use in order to be able to incorporate them into a paper,
in the way that I would an eps file?  I tried converting them to .eps (using
Acrobat and Photoshop respectively).  Most times it works, but some of the
conversions aren't satisfactory.  The dvi printout is perfect, but when I
use Distiller to make PDF, there are bits of the diagrams missing.
