marvosym encoding...

1) Someone from Y&Y tecnhical
support sent me a new .pfb
file, but
it did not work. In fact I had
already tried different
reencodings of
the font.

2) I am using Windows 2000
with Y&Y tex version 2.1

3) I installed the fonts using
windows 2000 proceduts:
Start -> Control panel ->
Fonts -> File menu -> Install
New Font .....
Certainly I do not use ATM on
windows 2000.

4) I have not used Knuth's
testfont.tex. When I preview
the font on
Dviwindo it comes ok with all
characters appearing on
screen.

5) In fact I downloaded the
marvosym.sty. It expects a OT1
encoding
of the font... When I include
it the font does not work even
for
screen previewing. It is not
clear to me whether
marvosym.sty
is for the TrueType version of
the font or not (or is it
indifferent?)

6) In fact I use marvosym.sty
(with the OT1 commands
commented), and
the common names for symbols
there in my tesfile...
everything works
fine
on the screen. The only
problem happens with dvips...

so far, so good.

ah. i note someone else has
sent you something (i don't
know what --
did i miss some mail on the
list?) it would be good to
know what that
is, to eliminate other
possibilities. the other
useful thing would be
to know the content of your
test file.

i would also like to know what
operating system you're using
(and what
version of y&y tex you have,
though that's less
significant, i expect).
_how_ did you "install the
fonts" (for example, if you've
installed them
using atm, on a w2k or xp
system, then troubles are
expected).

did you try knuth's (plain
tex) testfont.tex? -- it's a
good way to view
what a brand new font offers.

i would download and use

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archiv
e/fonts/psfonts/marvosym/marvo
sym.sty
with latex. this doesn't help
much if you're using plain or
something
else, except it gives you a
list of command names and
corresponding
symbol positions in the file.

i've got a shiny new y&y disc
at work, not installed yet. i
can try
things independently once i've
done that, some time next
week, with a
following wind.
