Well it would be easier to help if you would put a bit more effort
in giving details, for example a complete example. As it is it is
both unclear what you did before and what you did now. But as a
guess: the renderer could make a difference. That means
\setmainfont{Hoefler Text}[Renderer=OpenType]
and
\setmainfont{Hoefler Text}
could behave differently. (I don't have a mac and the font so I
can't test)
