Compiles correctly here with a fully updated TeX Live 2016:

fontspec.sty    2017/02/12 v2.6 Font selection for XeLaTeX and LuaLaTeX

  xparse.sty    2017/02/10 v6878 L3 Experimental document command parser

so I've got updated file versions. there were a few problems that cropped up with the 2.5x versions.
