[XeTeX] Bug or design flaw in Polyglossia 2012/04/29 v1.2.1

Hello!
With original XeTeX 0.9998 and recent (development) version 0.9999.2
in TeX Live 2012 I get this PDF output from a Malayalam text:

The empty boxes represent:
Missing character: There is no . in font Rachana/

When the missing characters are obviously Latin, why aren't they taken
from a Latin script, from \englishfont for example?
