Yes, it is documented. As default the font is set to CM family and OT1
encoding and ot1cm*.fd files map it to cm*.tfm files and the *.map
files map it usually to CM fonts, either bitmapped created by
Metafont, or Type1 fonts, but maps are also available to replace them
with Latin Modern using identical metrics.
