XeTeX obviously makes somehow an effort to set the italic correction
for open type fonts. But it seems to fail in math. Can something be
done about it?

\documentclass[12pt]{article}

\usepackage{fontspec}
\setmainfont{Times New Roman}
\makeatletter
\DeclareSymbolFont{letters}{\zf at enc}\rmdefault\mddefault\itdefault
%\DeclareSymbolFont{letters}{T1}{ptm}\mddefault\itdefault %works
\begin{document}

{\itshape f}( {\itshape f\/}(  \emph{f}(  \textit{f}( \textit{f\/}(

$f(a)$
\end{document}
