[XeTeX] Text on a path (was : Drop-shadows with outline fonts in XeTeX ?)

I've seen this done in PostScript, but not directly in PDF.
Surely Tikz has a method for this ???

I'm interested in good answers so that I can reply to 
a question about reproducing things like in the attached
image, using Xy-pic. It's only the text effect that
is not so easy.
