Common neutralization in American English: /d/ and /t/ are pronounced 
the same in some places, namely as /?/.

And I mean /see/, not simply /hear/.
Fortunately, spelling (in alphabetical writings, I mean) is 
phonological, not phonetic, otherwise Unicode would implode.
