[XeTeX] Diacritic characters wrongly positioned

Dear *,

I have an issue with diacritic characters and possibly XeTeX:

Diacritic characters like ē (e with a bar on top) seem to be rendered on top of the previous one and do not take any space, so the following one is put in the place where it would be if there were no diacritic character at all.

Here's an example of what it looks like in the PDF with an example of diacritical pinyin (Chinese romanization): http://cl.ly/240B462b04213N1t0P2o

I am using:
OS X Preview (OS X 10.6.4)
XeTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.2-0.9995.2 (TeX Live 2009)
UTF-8 encoding

The PDF is rendered the same way with Adobe Reader on my Mac.
