[XeTeX] xdvipdfmx fails on synthetically-slanted fonts

Something weired is happening here, doing:
cat pev.xdv | xdvipdfmx > pev.pdf
(which is more or less what xetex does) works fine, but passing file
name directly in the command line didn't.
