You can use a command line utility:

	sudo tlmgr update --self
	sudo tlmgr update --list
	sudo tlmgr update --all

The first command updates the tlmgr utility itself. Needed!
The second command then lists which packages will be updated – not  
really necessary, it just will be very long!
The third command is the one which will take a long time and update  
all packages (re-create FMT and MAP files), remove some, install new  
ones.
