This could have happened in case you told FontForge to *save* the  
opened file before quitting... (After opening some dialogs,  
particularly the info dialogs where one can select a Unicode block of  
characters to be displayed, the font file is set into a "changed"  
state although no change actually was applied to it. One has to pay a  
bit attention to not just press RET or click on OK. Maybe a keyboard  
shortcut which invokes xkill is a simpler means to quit FontForge...)
