[XeTeX] aligning section- and subsection etc. titles

\makebox is not robust you must protect it:

\documentclass{article}
\makeatletter
\renewcommand\@seccntformat[1]{\protect\makebox[1cm][l]{\csname
the#1\endcsname}\hspace{0.5ex}}
\makeatother

\begin{document}
\section{A}
\subsection{B}
\subsubsection{C}
\end{document}
