So, spotcolor.sty works in PDFLaTeX but not in XeLaTeX. Since I need to generate
color separations for the book I am working on, I need to generate spot colors.
I have done far too much with fontspec to really consider changing from Xe... at
this point.

So, why post to this list? Because I am really trying to understand how to
translate the \pdf... commands in PDFLaTeX to matching commands for XeLaTeX.

What I would like is a pointer to documentation on what specials exist and what
they mean. If someone knows of similar documentation for PDFLaTeX, that help,
too, would be gratefully received.

(a) \pdfobj - creates the pdf object which is then output with the \pdfrefobj -
how do these two translate? I am thinking that I can get the PDF documentation
and figure out what
  \pdfobj{<</C0[0 0 0 0]/FunctionType 2/C1[#4]/Domain[0 1]/N 1>>}
actually becomes and then just use pdf:literal or pdf:literal direct (pdf:code).

(b) If anyone out there either knows of a better way to get PDF/X3 separations
or can tell me that I am on the wrong track, please, let me know. I am beating
my head against things I don't understand at this point so any pointers are
appreciated (assume I am very ignorant of PDF's inner workings and you will be
right).

Thanks for any light you can shine,
- -bcl
