[XeTeX] newbie umlaut problems

You obviously did *not* save the file as UTF-8 or UTF-16 (the two  
formats XeTeX handles)! So pairs of 8-bit ISO-Latin or whatecer  
encoded characters were interpreted as UTF-8.

As a small exercise: which characters have in the encoding you've  
chosen for saving the file the hex values dd, 72, de, a0, 39, F2, A8,  
and 56?
