[XeTeX] Formatting dictionaries

The manual to fancyhdr, when discussing how to generate
catchwords in a dictionary (although it doesn't use the
word 'catchword' says that:

> Dictionaries are often done with two columns. Unfortunately there is a bug in LATEX’s twocolumn
> option which causes some marks to be lost. If you use David Carlisle’s fix2col.sty this will be
> solved.

Googling around shows that fix2col.sty is a really old goat.
Is this still an issue with XeLaTex, and is it an issue when
using multicol?
