[XeTeX] Font protrusion --- new or old ?

Well, back in the bad-old-days of virtual fonts one would just hack in  
a zero-width hyphen.... perhaps we need to standardize adding such to  
the Private Use Area?

Actually if there were a way to make the character which \hyphenchar  
sets expand to a macro one could do it w/o a virtual font.
