Thanks for your reply, Jonathan.

I wonder why version 1.5 is not the default option (since it generates
smaller files).

BTW, do you know whether similar improvements have been included in
pdftex? I remember reading something about it (a presentation, I cannot
remember), but setting \pdfminorversion=5 doesn't make any difference in
file size (at least, no noticeable one).
