It works here on MacOSX with
LinLibertine_Re-2.9.6.otf
LinLibertine_It-2.7.8.otf

I didn't install the 4.x version because MacOS complains about bugs in  
the fonts.
According to the LinLibertine bug tracker this may be an error in  
MacOS 10.5.

Maybe you can test older versions?
