Apparently they're just directly inserted into the .pdf file, so no  
recompression when the .pdf is made. The .pdf files are directly used  
for printing, so no post-processing, so no change afterwards.

There are several. e.g., Open in Acrobat Professional, Advanced |  
Document Processing | Export all images
