[XeTeX] strange xelatex behaviour, possibly bug?

This is a very old version. These days TeX Live 2008 has been  
released. You could try to update or better: to substitute (which  
means: remove any old TeX packages of your Linux system) your old TeX  
software with TeX Live 2008. It has its own "package manager" that  
can install updates at any time you wish, independent of a Linux  
package release.
