There in a serious incompatibility in both ConTeXt/XeLaTeX and gui
applications using the new vs. old version of those fonts. The new
version of fonts should be much better suited for use in GUI
applications. If you intend to use the font in Word, try to avoid the
old version. If you're using it in XeLaTeX, you need to update
fontspec & fonts simultaneously. There is no big quality difference,
but you can now make use of optical sizes automatically, and font
names make more sense.

No. So you (will) have the old version of fonts in your Font Book even
after update. Try to avoid using that old version.
