Rebuilding from the most recent tarball, so as to get

	XeTeX 3.1415926-2.2-0.998.3-dev (Web2C 7.5.6)

solves the issue: no .synctex.gz file any longer, with default settings.

With the older version from a week ago

	XeTeX 3.1415926-2.2-0.998.1 (Web2C 7.5.6)

either with default settings or with -synctex=0, a .synctex.gz file
was created.

So much for living on the edge!
