[XeTeX] What is synctex?

Regarding the last question, and based on "xetex --help" which says

-synctex=NUMBER         generate SyncTeX data for previewers if nonzero

I just tried adding the option -synctex=0 when invoking xelatex, with  
no luck: a .synctex.gz file is still created.
