Gezhu.sty does not require zhspacing. It doesn't require XeTeX either,
as it is just an e-TeX macro package. It is the demo and sample of
gezhu that used the zhspacing package.

In fact gezhu.sty does not deal with vertical typesetting itself. It
just provides gezhu(warichu) support for TeX/LaTeX. The vertical
typesetting needs to be specified in your .tex source file, with the
help of the package everyshi or atbegshi. If you just need a small
piece of text to be typeset vertically, just use the \rotatebox.
