Easier than you realise :)
Classically, the British use single quotes as outer and double quotes
as inner, while the Americans do things the wrong way 'round. Down in
Australia, we've got no idea what's going on; I suspect we used to use
single quotes predominantly but have been adversely affected by the
Americans over the years.
