I think the previous answers here have been enough to explain the
basics, which is as much as I know. To sum it up, "linearised" or
"optimal" PDF is larger in file size but quicker to access when the
document is being viewed in a browser. Personally, I wouldn't bother
doing it unless you know that the main way that people will be reading
it is in this manner.
